Capital gain

The profit generated from an increase in value of a capital asset (e.g., stock or real estate). Capital gains can be characterized as long-term (capital assets held for more than a year) or short-term (capital assets held for less than a year). Long-term capital gains are generally taxed at a lower rate than short-term capital gains and ordinary income.
